Reliability and cost of power has the power to confirm or deny a potential Data Center location faster than any other metric.
When calculating Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of your future Data Center, an accurate estimation of power costs is essential.
Reliability of Power
Of course power companies all strive for reliable power and many succeed. But with the recent spate of summer brownouts and blackouts it is called into question whether many utilities are capable of supporting mission critical data infrastructure.
Beyond a stable uptime history it is ideal to have a Data Center facility where power can be pulled from two separate substations.
Cavern has this capability and is proud to partner with KCP&L for our Data Center power solutions. For the Seventh year in a row KCP&L has been named the most reliable power company in the region.
Due to availability of resources, robustness of transportation infrastructure, power mix, population density and efficiency of the utility, there can be huge swings in the price of electricity in the United States.

At 5-7 cents per kilowatt-hour, states like Washington, Idaho, Wyoming and Kansas (!) have some of the lowest rates in the country, while Texas, New Jersey, and Connecticut can be two to three times higher at over 15 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Kansas City metro rates are even lower in the 3.5-4.5 cents per kilowatt-hour range.
Cooling the air that circulates around the servers is the biggest source for power consumption in the Data Center. Efficient and green power are important ways to minimize a company’s carbon footprint, improve PUE (power unit effectiveness) increase their ROI from their Data Center. If servers are cooled via a chiller, it is important that access to water and redundant sources of water is also examined.
Access to Diesel
If power is down for an extended period of time it is essential to have a contingency plan to access fuel to run back-up generators. Your data center location should have ready access to fuel to power backup generators.
Your company is dynamic and creating and storing data to grow. With a business plan designed to scale your data, it is important that the regulatory and pragmatic realities of a power company that can scale to meet that increasing critical load power capacity.
The Power of Partnership
As well Cavern’s power company partner KCP&L offers “One Year of Free Power” for new Data Center customers in the area.
Being an Energy Star rated our facility is 80% more efficient than other buildings. Because the ambient temperature underground is 68 degrees, our customers cooling costs are reduced by 20-30%. That is not only good for the planet but also good for the bottom line.
